Scholars

In September 2013, a new Scholarship scheme began at St John's under the leadership of our Director of Music. Four Choral Scholars (SATB) and an Organ Scholar now take part in most of the Sunday services, and at Choral Evensong, usually on the first Sunday of each month.

Music for Children

Music is a very important part of Christian Spirituality for people of all ages. We take seriously our responsibility to introduce children to Christian music, especially as this is no longer provided through the National Curriculum.

Musicians in Residence

St John’s offers the Musicians-in-Residence scheme to encourage and develop talented young musicians, who offer their services free to the liturgical music programme of the church. In return for this, the church offers the use of its space for teaching and occasional concert work.

THE ORGAN

The organ in St John’s is a significant heritage item, not only because of its provenance but also because it offers a direct link to a hugely important movement in global history. It is doubly historic, both for the amount of eighteenth- century material contained within it and for the now very rare action mechanism installed in the nineteenth century.
