William Taylor on the Silk Road
This is my journey, following the path of monks along the Silk Road. Silk Road is of course a misnomer, because there were many different roads and routes in use at different times. It seems more likely that the monks footsteps I am retracing used the northern silk route, to the north of the Caspian Sea. That is the route I will be taking, through Turkey, the Caucasus, southern Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and China. My journey will end in Xian (formerly Changan), one time imperial capital of China, and generally the eastern terminus of the different silk routes. As far as possible, I will be staying in monasteries, and monks will be my companions.
