With Ben Johnson and Tom Primrose
Tickets £10 and £6 concessions - available at the door
St John’s Director of Music, Tom Primrose, accompanies acclaimed tenor Ben Johnson, who represented England in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013 and won the Audience Prize. They perform Schubert’s Winterreise, a song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert (D. 911, published as Op. 89 in 1828), a setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is considered a masterpiece and is much loved by audiences across the world.
‘Schubert has understood his poet with the kind of genius that is his own. His music is as naïve as the poet’s expression; the emotions contained in the poems are as deeply reflected in his own feelings, and these are so brought out in sound that none can sing or hear them without being touched to the heart.’
– Theaterzeitung (29 March 1828)
